Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle & The Holy Island of Lindisfarne
If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, Vikings, magnificent castles or priory ruins on a romantic island,
then this is the ideal tour for you.

For this day tour, we leave Scotland and head south to England and to the county of Northumberland, famous for its Viking history and attractive towns.

On our way south, we’ll take photo stops at the English border (there’s a sign) and the town of Berwick upon Tweed, the finest example of a walled town in northern Europe.

Our first extended stop is on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. This tidal island is famous for being the first place in the British Isles to suffer an attack at the hands of the Vikings (shown in the first season of the History Channel show Vikings) as well as being home to some excellent mead. Here, you’ll have a chance to visit the 16th century ruins of Lindisfarne Priory.

Afterwards, we’ll head to the historic market town of Alnwick. The town itself is worth a look around, and you can have lunch in one of the many pubs or cafes in the town. It’s also home to probably the best second-hand bookshop in the UK. After lunch, you can visit Alnwick Castle, the second largest inhabited castle in England. This is worth a visit for the history alone, but nowadays is also world famous as being a filming location for the Harry Potter movies.

***Please note  - Alnwick Castle is only open April - October.***

***Please note  - access to Lindisfarne is dependent on the tide times, which change daily. Due to this, sometimes we will visit Lindisfarne before Alnwick, and sometimes after. We’ll let you know which it is when you book.***
